Fortnite: Battle Royale is the most popular, and main PvP gamemode in Fortnite. Because of this, players will need a strategy to be able to survive and get the Victory Royale. Players can also be eliminated by entities in Battle Royale, whether they are AIs, or The Storm. Below is a list of tips for Fortnite: Battle Royale that many players may not know.

Jump To:

General[]

In Battle Royale, 100 players will jump off the Battle Bus, regardless of whether they are in teams of 1, 2, 3, 4, or larger. In each game, players will gather loot and survive The Storm, as well as eliminating players until they are the last ones standing. If they are the last standing, they will get a Victory Royale and a Victory Crown or a Crown Royale (if already have a Victory Crown).

Settings[]

There are different Controls depending on what platform you are playing on. A good idea if you are starting to play Fortnite on a new platform is to go into a game of Fortnite: Creative or Battle Lab and get used to the controls.

Below is the list of input devices supported:

  • Mouse and Keyboard (PC and Consoles except Nintendo Switch)
  • Xbox One Controller (Xbox and PC)
  • PlayStation Controller (DualShock 4 for PlayStation 4 or DualSense for PlayStation 5, also connects to PC)
  • Nintendo Switch Joy Con (Nintendo Switch only)
  • Touch Screen (Android smartphones)

You can also select between different Game Settings to alter the way you play Battle Royale (please note that this also applies for Save The World and Creative). If you are playing Fortnite on a Windows PC or a macOS (removed from the game) , you can choose keybinds, which select the functions of different keys on the keyboard.

If you have a low-end computer you may want to consider turning on performance mode to boost performance or turning down your graphics a small bit. If performance is still poor, consider using cloud services to play the game. (GeForce Now or Xbox Game Pass).

Even on high-end gaming computers most players prefer to set graphics settings to Performance Mode to maximize frame rates for high refresh rate monitors and gaming laptops. (144hz and up).

8th generation consoles (Xbox One/PlayStation 4) are locked to 60 FPS, but the 9th generation consoles (Series X/PS5) can set the frame rate to 120 FPS. If your TV/Monitor can support 120hz refresh, set it to 120 FPS. Nintendo Switch is locked to 30 FPS.

Gameplay[]

Player Movement[]

There are many types of movement in Fortnite. Later sections cover things like vehicles, so this section is about core player movements. Here is a list of them:

  • Walk - Allows the player to move. Players can use items while walking.
  • Sprinting - Players move faster while sprinting but also lose energy. Once it runs out they can't sprint until it recharges.
  • Jump - Allows the player to reach heights above them without using stairs. Players can use items while jumping. Jumping too quickly without a break will cause each new jump to be slightly lower than the last until you stop jumping.
  • Swimming - Allows the player to traverse oceans faster. You can jump mid-swim to dive. You can only use items while in water if you are not moving.
  • Falling - This occurs when you get pulled down by gravity. You can sometimes control your direction while falling. If you fall of a very high height then you will take damage. You can usually use items while falling.
  • Mantling - Allows the player to grab onto edges and climb up even higher than jumping allows them to.
  • Crouching - Allows the player to become smaller and climb through vents and gaps. Players can use items while crouching.
  • Sliding - Allows the player to move down slopes faster. Players can use items while sliding.
  • Shoulder Bashing - Allows the player to barge open doors whole sprinting or sliding.
  • Skydiving - You will enter this state after jumping from the Battle Bus or using certain items (such as launch pads). In this state, you can usually pull out your Glider. Once you get close to the ground or an object, your Glider will automatically deploy.
  • Gliding - Allows the player to pull out their glider and negate fall damage. This normally occurs after using a launch pad, falling after jumping from the Battle Bus, or falling in a mode where Glider Redeploy is enabled (Such as Team Rumble or Creative).

Looting[]

Looting is a priority at the start of a game of Battle Royale. You will have to carry something that will deal damage to other players, and collect loot of better Rarity as you progress. Loot can come from Chests, Ammo Boxes, Faction Chests, Supply Drops, and Supply Llamas. A good loadout will consist of 3 weapons (2 of them should ideally be an Assault Rifle and a Shotgun or SMG), and 2 consumable items/1 consumable and 1 throwable (Ideally a consumable that gives you Shield.)

Containers[]

Fishing[]

Fishing is a mechanic in Battle Royale that allows players to obtain loot from throwing a Fishing Rod or a Pro Fishing Rod into some water. Another way of fishing is to fire a Harpoon Gun at Fishing Spots. This will quickly pick up a fish, or another form of loot. The Pro Fishing Rod allows players to obtain some unique variants of Fish. See Fishing Collection Book for the full list of obtainable fish. Fishing is the primary way of obtaining fish.

If a Loot Shark bites your fishing rod, you will be riding that loot shark as a form of transportation. Unfortunately you cannot ride a Loot Shark with a Harpoon Gun

Fishing rods and Harpoon Guns can also be used to pull players, including teammates, towards you.

Damage[]

  • Damage can be taken very easily in Battle Royale, and it is best for players to know how to avoid taking damage. Below is a list of every way players can take damage, and how to avoid it.
    • Players - Players (and AIs/The Storm) do have the ability to damage you in Battle Royale - It wouldn't be any fun if they didn't! To avoid players from dealing damage to you, a good strategy is to either be behind a tile, or build your own tile.
    • Fall Damage - Fall Damage can be taken from jumping off of an excessively high point of terrain. To avoid this, Crash Pads(Removed) are an option, and any other item that can prevent this. Landing in water (or a bush) should also be a priority.
    • Drowning - It is very hard to drown in Fortnite, and almost impossible to do it accidentally. However, it is possible, which players will need to take into account and not swim too far down.
    • Vehicles - If a vehicle is going at a high speed and is heading towards you, run out of its path unless it is your teammates. Do not shoot at it or attempt to jump over it. It will deal a high amount of damage if it crashes into you. If your teammate is in the vehicle then it will bounce you far from the car like a Shockwave Grenade.
    • Glitches - Glitches are almost impossible to do accidentally, but if you feel that the action your are doing will result in a glitch, don't do it. Exploiting glitches will have severe consequenses such as being in an unwanted location, clipping under the ground (instant elimination), or at worst being banned.

Healing[]

Healing is a mechanic in Battle Royale that allows players to regain health and shield after it has been taken away from them. In order to do this, players will have to consume an item that will heal either their health, or their shield. Below is a list of every item that functions this way:

The Storm[]

The Storm is an entity in Battle Royale that closes in at different times, and deals damage to players who are in it. It does not deal damage to your shield. The areas where The Storm will close in to can be displayed on the minimap. Make sure you are not going beyond the purple line, as that is where the storm is. The damage that the storm deals varies, and so does the speed that the storm closes in. The Storm will deal more damage later into the match, making it more of a priority for players to evade it. However, if you stay in the storm for long enough, you will start taking very large amounts of damage due to Storm Sickness. A good way of evading (running away from) the storm is to land at a location that is near the center of the island. This way, it will not matter where the storm closes in, you will easily be able to get there. Additionally, a good strategy is to make sure you always have a form of transportation that is easily accessible, whether it is a Grappler, or a Vehicle.

AIs[]

AIs are different entities in Fortnite that have the ability eliminate players. Some good ways of taking them down are to not make too much sound, and to shoot at them from a far away radius. and any npc

Types:

  • Bots - Bots are entities introduced in Season X that act as regular opponents in Fortnite: Battle Royale. They are usually fairly simple to eliminate.
  • Boars and Wolves - These AI can be killed for meat and can also be tamed. When given meat or bones they will stop attacking and start eating which gives you a chance to tame them. You can also ride on them to get around faster.
  • Monsters - Monsters will spawn out of either Cube Spawners or Ice Spawners. They have the ability to break down structures, tiles and props, and they drop different rarities of loot depending on how difficult they are to eliminate. They are found in Sideways Anomalies in Chapter 2 Season 8.
  • Loot Sharks - Loot Sharks will spawn in set locations. They will drop weapons, ammunition and materials, however they can swallow weapons as well. They are moderately easy to eliminate, as long as you are on land and ideally on a high point of terrain. These are also rideable. To ride them, you need to put a Fishing Rod on the water, and wait for the Loot Shark to bite it.
  • Guards - Guards usually spawn in preset locations, but sometimes they can spawn randomly (Such as stark robots and the IO Guards from Chapter 2: Season 5).
  • Bosses - Bosses are arguably the most difficult AI to eliminate. However, these bosses are worth eliminating, because they drop a Mythic weapon/item which is a weapon that typically has a lot of power in the match with gives you a higher chance of winning with the Mythic loot.
  • Characters - Characters can sell Exotic weapons, other weapons, ammo, consumables, and sometimes can be duelled to get specific weapons that are worth fighting for.

Victory Royales[]

Main Article: Victory Royale

The Victory Royale is what players earn when they win a game of fortnite. These will be tracked on your stats and will determine to other players how good you are at playing Fortnite: Battle Royale. Players will earn a victory royale around a month (on average) after they start playing Battle Royale. It may be less than that if they were previously playing Fortnite: Creative or Fortnite: Save the World. Winning a game awards players with a Victory Crown and if they win wearing one for the first time, they are rewarded with the Crowning Achievement Emote which count the number of Victory Royales wearing the Victory Crown each season.

Strategies[]

Camping[]

Camping is a strategy in Battle Royale that involves hiding from other players so they cannot find you, which will prevent them from eliminating you. Below is a list of occasions in which it is a good idea to Camp, and the best places for performing this action.

When to Camp:

  • When an opponent is looking for you and you are not good enough or too under-equipped to fight.
  • When you are on low Health/Shield and you need to heal.
  • When you are not good enough or under-equipped to directly fight enemies.

Where to Camp:

  • There are certain items that are used specifically for camping, such as the Bush, Sneaky Snowman or Creepin’ Cardboard. Unfortunately these are vaulted right now.
  • There are large bushes that can contain more than one player scattered around the Apollo and Artemis islands. They are good for hiding in while healing and crafting as you will not be seen.
  • Another commonly used strategy is to simply surround yourself in tiles and regain your Health/Shield.
  • Boxing up is the most visible form of camping and if you box up try to stay still so enemies will not see you in the box or use metal.
  • Aim down sights near the edge of a large bush to see outside of the bush without enemies being able to see in.
  • Hold still while inside a large bush or a garbage can as they will shake a little bit and make a bit of noise.
  • Use armored walls. don't fill your box full with them, or you'll be trapped because you can't edit armored walls!

Materials and Building[]

Materials are used to build tiles to defend yourself against other players shooting at you. They can be obtained by firing your Harvesting Tool at different tiles and props. There are three different types of building resource altogether - Wood, Stone and Metal. Each of these materials are useful for different things.

  • Wood - Wood is useful for players who need to quickly build a structure to protect themselves against enemy players. Wood is commonly used when two players are in a "Build Fight", as it gains health quickly. However, this material can easily be destroyed. Wood is most easily and quickly obtained from harvesting Trees.
  • Stone - Stone is useful in the late stage of a game of Battle Royale, because it is a good material for building a small fort to hide in while you are shooting at other players. Stone is most easily and quickly obtained from harvesting Rocks.
  • Metal - Metal is useful in the late stage of a game of Battle Royale for building large, team fortresses where each player can shoot at the opponents and have a safe place for heal. Metal is the material that is the hardest to destroy. Metal is hardest to obtain due to most cars becoming drivable and destroying cars can deal damage to you.

Bars[]

Bars are a material that were added to Battle Royale, at the start of Chapter 2: Season 5. Bars are found in many objects related to money including safes, large couches, beds, washing machines, registers, chests, and when eliminating players and NPCs. They can be used to buy items and weapons from NPCs, hire NPCs, upgrade weapons, and buy temporary abilities from NPCs such as locating nearby chests and cars, rifts, or prop disguises.

The Map[]

Locations[]

Main Article: Battle Royale Map

Locations are points of interest on the Battle Royale Island that are named on the minimap, and have a significant amount of loot for players to gather. Landmarks are unnamed locations with less loot than Locations. You can land at any location on the Island after jumping out of the Battle Bus. It is best to land at a location that normally has a low population, along with a lot of chests and loot. Be weary that locations such as Tilted Towers and Reality Falls will have a high population, and lots of locations that were originally on Athena will be popular.

Landmarks are usually a worse place to land than Locations, but some landmarks such as Camp Cod and The Orchard will still have a significant amount of loot.

Game Modes[]

Competitive[]

Fortnite: Battle Royale has a Competitive section, which includes Tournaments (Sometimes to win Cosmetic Items or cash prizes), leaderboards featuring professional Fortnite: Battle Royale players, and a core gamemode called Arena which has 3 leagues and 10 divisions that consist of players with different skills. Competitive Fortnite is not for beginners, play public matches first before trying competitive play. There are also Creative games that practice your aim and mechanics. Be weary that players who are in these gamemodes are normally good at Battle Royale, and you will definitely need a strategy if you would like to win.

In a team based game mode (Duos or Trios), good communication with your team is a must. Play games in Creative that simulate a box fight or an end game to improve your skill for tournament play. Creative games titled "Box/Build Fights" or "Zone Wars" are the ones you look for. If you are a professional or wanting to be, play custom Arena matches with other professionals which simulates a tournament match. If you have enough skill and dedicate most of your time at competitive Fortnite, at the end of each season try to make a run in the Fortnite Champion Series.

In a tournament game:

  • Always assume that Storm Surge will be active in the game and have a plan for Storm Surge. Storm Surge is a mechanic in stacked games to encourage players to fight and players that are below a set damage threshold will be taking 25 damage every 5 seconds. The game will warn you when Storm Surge is about to be active (70+ players in 3rd circle, 50+ players in 5th circle, and 30+ players in 7th circle).
  • In the early game, focus on looting and gathering materials. If your location is contested (enemies around your drop location), engage on the enemy to get damage for Storm Surge and try to avoid buildoffs with enemies as it waste materials and increase the possibility of being 3rd partied. If your location is within the first storm circle and there is no enemies around you, do not stay in your dropped location as you will be below first Storm Surge.
  • During the mid game, if you have enough damage for Storm Surge, get to the center of the storm circle and build a box for you and (in a team game mode), your team. However, if you do not deal enough damage, hold at the edge of the next storm circle as early as possible so you can deal damage to players who are trying to move within the storm circle.
  • Avoid using wood to build a box for your team, as you will be focused by other players. If you are running out of brick or metal, try boxing up with natural cover if possible or get a refresh by eliminating enemies.
  • In the 4th storm circle, move to the edge of the storm circle in case the 5th circle (the half-and-half circle) pulls towards you.
  • In the end game decide your positioning. Play for high ground for better placement but make sure to watch your material count and players that might make a play for height. If your focus is to get eliminations, playing in the mid or low ground is more ideal. However, if end games is in mountainous terrain, low ground is very difficult to play in.
  • If you have a lot of healing items when the 9th storm circle closes, play for a Victory Royale by using all your healing items that restore HP (Floppers, Med Kits, Chug Cannons, etc.)

Some Tournaments, such as the #FreeFortnite Cup and Lachlan's Pickaxe Frenzy Tournament, allow players to win free cosmetic items. Cash Cups allows players who reach Champion League (Division 8 or higher) to win cash prizes.

Team Rumble[]

Main Article: Team Rumble

Team Rumble is a gamemode that consists of 2 teams of 16 players. This gamemode is more similar to team deathmatch than battle roayle. Glider Redeploy is enabled in this gamemode, and some weapons have come out of the vault. The main thing you should focus on is eliminating as many players as possible. Please note that respawning is a feature in this, but try not to die as it gives the opposing team more points. Land at Locations where you do not think many other players will land at.

The Storm immediately appears in Team Rumble. It shrinks faster and deal more damage than other modes.

LTMs[]

Main Article: Limited Time Modes

LTMs (Limited Time Modes) are gamemodes in Battle Royale that are around for a limited amount of time. They are normally similar to regular Battle Royale but with a twist, such as weapons coming out of The Vault, or players only being able to use Sniper Rifles. In LTMs, do not be distracted by unique loot, as sometimes that can not be the best option. Try to obtain the loadout with the same type of items and weaponry that you would normally carry. Some LTMs, such as Marvel Knockout will feature a tournament. In LTMs like these, make sure you get as many eliminations as possible. Players’ stats are tracked in some Limited Time Modes.

Other examples of LTMs are Unvaulted, Solid Gold, and Sniper Shootout.

Cosmetics[]

Main Article: Cosmetic Items

Cosmetics are features in Battle Royale that change players' appearance. These items cost V-Bucks that may be purchased using real life money or can be obtained for free from grinding the free Battle Pass for long enough. Cosmetics are designed to not influence the chances of winning although this is not entirely balanced. This does not make Battle Royale pay to win. However there is some argument that it is pay to win as some Outfits can blend in with the environment or even disguise as Characters.

The main types of cosmetic items include Outfits, Gliders, Back Blings, Wraps, Emotes and Harvesting Tools.
