Ammunition (or Ammo) is a category of items in Fortnite. It is the primary method of resupplying and reloading weaponry. Ammunition was introduced with the launch of the game.
Description
Ammunition across all game modes allows weaponry to fire. Without Ammunition, weapons will be unable to reload, and attack further. There are five ammo types which are consistent across modes, with Battle Royale and Creative containing several more types, some of which do not have associated pickups.
Both Modes
Light Bullets are used for Pistols, Submachine Guns and some Assault Weapons.
Medium Bullets are used for Assault Weapons and some Pistols and Sniper Rifles.
Heavy Bullets are used for Sniper Rifles, and some Pistols.
Shells are used for Shotguns, and some Bows.
Rockets are used for Explosive Weapons.
Energy Ammo is used for Energy Weapons.
Battle Royale/Creative
Arrows are used for Bows and Crossbows.
Junk Ammo is used for the Recycler.
Fire is used for the Flare Gun.
Hooks are used for Grapplers and the Harpoon Gun.
Scanner Ammo is used for the Recon Scanner.
Plasma Ammo is used for the Plasma Cannon.
Med Mist is used for the Med Mist.
Gas is used for the Gas Can.
Saws are used for the Ripsaw Launcher.
In Battle Royale, there are 6 ammo types that can be replenished and found as Floor Loot, all of which are Common:
Light Bullets are used mainly for Pistols and Submachine Guns, but is used for some Assault Weapons, such as the Minigun and Tactical Assault Rifle. they typically deal the least damage per shot.
Medium Bullets are used mainly for Assault Rifles, but is used for some Sniper Rifles and Pistols. As per its name, they deal a medium amount of damage per shot.
Heavy Bullets are used mainly for Sniper Rifles, however some pistols, such as the Flint-Knock Pistol use it too. Per shot they do the a high amount of damage compared to other ammo types.
Shells are used mainly for Shotguns, but the Boom Bow uses them too. They are unique in that many weapons using them fire a short ranged 'buckshot' spread, rather than a single bullet. The damage for this ammo type varies, but on average they deal high damage up close, and very low at range.
Arrows are used for Bows and Crossbows. About the same amount of it can be held as
Heavy Bullets, and it can deal around the same damage. Crossbows use
Arrows in name only, and do not use it as an ammo pickup.
Rockets are used for Explosive Weapons. they are often a slow moving projectile which deal high splash damage upon impact.
Junk Ammo is only used for the Recycler. It does not appear as a pickup, but can instead be replenished by destroying structures with the Recycler.
Fire is only used by the Flare Gun. Like
Junk Ammo, it does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the Flare Gun.
Hooks are used by Grapplers and the Harpoon Gun. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for these weapons.
Energy Ammo is an ammo type used for weapons that fire energy beams, such as Kymera Ray Gun and First Order Blaster Rifle. It is infinite and doesn't appear as a pick-up. The removed Zapotron also used
Energy Ammo.
Scanner Ammo is only used for the Recon Scanner. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the weapon.
Plasma Ammo is only used for the Plasma Cannon. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the weapon.
Med Mist is only used for Med Mist. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the item.
Gas is only used for the Gas Can. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the item.
Saws are only used for the Ripsaw Launcher. It does not appear as a pickup, but instead acts as the internal ammunition for the weapon.
Obtained
Ammunition is obtained primarily from Ammo Boxes. Ammo can also be obtained from Floor Loot, Chests, from Fishing, from Supply Llamas and in Supply Drops. Some AIs will also drop Ammo.
Trivia
- When marked, ammo will not use its world model render, instead it uses the flat color icon for each ammo type.
- Despite not having a pickup,
Junk Ammo has a world model icon like the other ammo types.
Shells is referred to as Shells 'n Slugs in Save the World. This title is more fitting for that mode, as some Shotguns do not fire a buckshot, but rather a slug.
- The same should now be true for Battle Royale, as the new Heavy Shotgun fires a slug, and not a shell.
Energy Ammo has appeared as a pickup in Battle Royale, appearing alongside the Zapotron before its removal.
Heavy Bullets is the first Ammo type to be fully vaulted (outside of Team Rumble) in core modes since its initial inclusion.
In Save the World there are six different types of Ammunition, all of which are Uncommon. These can all be crafted, or obtained from the map in various ways.
Light Bullets are used mainly for Pistols and Submachine Guns, but is also used for some Assault Weapons. Out of the ammo types, the player can hold the most of this (max. 6000), and typically it does the least damage per shot.
Medium Bullets are used mainly for Assault Weapons, but is used for some Sniper Rifles, Pistols and Submachine Guns. The player can hold plenty of it (max. 4000), but not as much as Light Ammo. As per its name, it deals a medium amount of damage per shot.
Heavy Bullets are used mainly for Sniper Rifles, including Bows, however some pistols use them too. Not too much of them can be held (max. 1000), but per shot it does the a high amount of damage compared to other ammo types.
Shells are used mainly for Shotguns, but it is also used by the Boom Bow. They are unique in that many weapons using them fire a short ranged 'buckshot' spread, rather than a single bullet. A decent amount of Shells can be held by the player (max. 1200). The damage for this ammo type varies, but on average it deals high damage up close, and very low at range.
Energy Ammo is used for a variety of weapons. A decent amount of Energy Ammo can be held by the player. Energy ammo is expensive to craft, but the weapons that use it often have unique abilities or deal high amounts of damage. The player can hold quite a lot (max. 3000), but many weapons consume multiple ammo per shot.
Rockets is used for Launchers. It is often a slow moving projectile which deals high splash damage upon impact. The player can hold very few rockets (max. 150), and they are not cheap to craft.

Visuals
Medium Bullets is based of the 5.56 x 45mm NATO calibre rounds. These bullets are often used for Assault Rifles and Carbines in real life.
- This is not certain however, as Medium Ammo has a vague resemblance to these rounds, but no round looks identical to the one in game. However, based on its usage in many Assault Weapons, it is fair assumption is based on the 5.56mm.
- It is unrealistic for any pistols in game to use these specific rounds. Although something like the Revolver uses a heavier hitting calibre round than a standard 9mm (
Light Bullets) round, it would not use the same as a Assault Weapon. This is obviously implemented for balance reasons.
Light Bullets is based upon 9x19mm Parabellum Rounds. These bullets are often used for Pistols and Submachine Guns. The Tactical Assault Rifle has a thinner magazine, and its use of Light Ammo is realistic.
- Real Miniguns and Gatling guns would use a larger calibre bullet, but for gameplay purposes and to balance the damage, it fires
Light Bullets.
- The FN P90 (Compact SMG/High-tier SMG) fires FN 5.7x28mm rounds, not 9mm Light Ammo rounds. If a P90 were modified to fire 9mm rounds, it would hold 80 rounds in its magazine.
- Real Miniguns and Gatling guns would use a larger calibre bullet, but for gameplay purposes and to balance the damage, it fires
Heavy Bullets is based upon .338 Lapua Magnum rounds. This is true to the calibre of many Sniper Rifles, such as the Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle's real life counterpart, the AWM, which fires this round.
- However, a weapon like the Desert Eagle (Hand Cannon) uses similar ammunition as the Revolver (.357 vs .44 Magnum), and as such should not use
Heavy Bullets. This is changed in game for balance reasons however.

Shells are based off 12 Gauge Shotgun Shells. Weapons such as the SPAS-12 (High Tier Pump Shotgun) fire these rounds.
Rockets is a collection of warheads for an RPG-7.
- Almost all Explosive Weapons in Battle Royale should not accept this ammunition. For most Launchers, such as the High Tier Rocket Launcher or Quad Launcher, it would be incompatible.
- Furthermore, the Grenade Launcher and Proximity Grenade Launcher do not even shoot rockets. These changes have all been made for balance reasons.

- Most weapons in Save the World use a smaller calibre bullets than in real life, such as the SCAR-L (Siegebreaker) using
Light Bullets instead of
Medium Bullets or the AWM (Dragonfly and Scoped Dragonfly) using
Medium Bullets instead of
Heavy Bullets.
