Jump into your own Battle Royale island and set the rules! Select from favorite LTM loot pools, set up combat scenarios with the new Bot Grenades, and create your own mode by setting options like gravity and fall damage. Fill your game with up to 15 friends on your own island, or matchmake with default options in public Battle Lab.
— In-Game Description

Battle Lab was the open-world/sandbox game mode of Fortnite: Battle Royale that was introduced on December 18th 2019, serving as a successor to Playground. For unknown reasons, it was removed in Update v16.30 on April 27th 2021, but was re-added shortly after in Content Update v16.30 on May 4th 2021.

When Chapter 3: Season 1 launched, Battle Lab could still be selected, but attempting to launch it would crash the game. This was due to spawn locations still being set for the Apollo island rather than Artemis. The issue was quickly resolved with updated spawn points.

Battle Lab was removed at the beginning of Chapter 4: Season 1 as players could use Creative to create a similar experience using the Battle Royale Island. Its removal also made way for the introduction of Unreal Editor.

Gameplay[]

In Battle Lab, players could freely explore the current Battle Royale island for up to 4 hours per game session, after which the Storm would begin to fully close in. There were items exclusive to this mode, called Friendly Bot Grenades and Enemy Bot Grenades, which would spawn Bots as either teammates or opponents. All Chests and Ammo Boxes had a 100% spawn rate, and approximately 100 Loot Llamas would spawn each match. Much like in Playground, the Harvest Multiplier was set to 10x. Quest completion was disabled.

Players had the option to create a private match or matchmake with up to 15 other public players.

Respawning was also enabled, allowing players to continue exploring after being eliminated.

This was the only game mode besides Creative to include weapons not available in Battle Royale, such as the Common Assault Rifle.

Match Options[]

Before loading into a private session, players could customize various game settings for their match.

Friendly and Enemy Bot Grenades[]

Arrow Right - Icon - Creative Main Article: Bot Grenades

Enemy Bot Grenades spawn an opposing bot when thrown. These bots initially carry a Common Assault Rifle, but can collect other weapons and items during the match. Friendly Bot Grenades work the same way, except the bots they spawn are on the player's team and will not attack them.

Unavailable Items[]

The following items were not available in Battle Lab regardless of the loot pool selected, though they were accessible in core Battle Royale playlists.
