Battle Lab was the open world/sandbox game mode of Fortnite: Battle Royale. It was introduced on December 18th 2019. For unknown reasons on April 27th 2021, Battle lab was removed but was soon re-added on May 4th 2021. It is the successor to Playground.
When Chapter 3: Season 1 launched, Battle Lab could have been selected, but launching it would crash the game. This was because the spawn locations were still from Apollo island instead of Artemis. This was quickly fixed, with new spawn points added.
Battle Lab was removed at the start of Chapter 4: Season 1 as players can use Creative to create a similar experience using Battle Royale island, but also to make way for Unreal Editor.
Gameplay[]
In this Game Mode, players can freely explore the current Battle Royale island for 24 hours per game session. After that time, The Storm begins to close in completely. There are items exclusive to this game mode, called Friendly Bot Grenades and Enemy Bot Grenades. These grenades will spawn as Bots, that are either teammates or opponents. All Chests and Ammo Boxes have a 100% spawn rate. There are also almost approximately 100 Loot Llamas per game.
Players can create a private Battle Lab or matchmake with 15 other public players.
Respawning is enabled in Battle Lab, should a player be eliminated.
This was the only gamemode besides Creative to have weapons that are not not in Battle Royale, with Battle Lab having the Common Assault Rifle.
Tips[]
- You can use Battle Lab to freely explore the island and search for an ideal drop spot for Battle Royale.
- Any materials harvested are multiplied by 10 times what you'd normally get.
- Battle Lab is not recommended for professional scrims because of the player limit. Use Custom Matchmaking for this. For build/box fights, use Creative.
- It is not viable for attempting to complete Milestones or Quests, as progress for towards them is disabled in Battle Lab.
- You can use Battle Lab to have fun with the props.
- One unique purpose that the youtuber Postboxpat came up with was that you could use it to make bosses and other NPCs fight against each other until one elimintated the other even though it is extremely difficult.
- Battle Lab is ideal for roleplay when playing in public lobbies.

Friendly/Enemy Bot Grenades[]

Enemy bot grenades will spawn in an opponent when thrown. They spawn with a Common Assault Rifle when they spawn, but have the ability to gather other weaponry and items. Friendly bot grenades have the same function, except they will not attack you, as they are on the same team as you.
