Cars are a subset of Vehicles in Fortnite: Battle Royale. They were introduced in Chapter 2: Season 3.

Functionality and Classification

Cars are land vehicles, each with two or three pairs of tires and two to four seats. Cars have varying amounts of health, and each of them will explode into a burned chassis on destruction. Cars can also have their tires shot out in order to slow the vehicle, and cause it to take one damage every second for each destroyed tire. These tires can be modified with the use of Vehicle Mod: Off-Road Tires. Cars range in speed, and each car has different speeds on different terrain. All cars will move on water, but if left for too long will sink and be inaccessible, unless moved from the water. If the player ends up upside down for a long period of time, they will be ejected. You will then be given the option to flip a car upright when it is upside down.

Cars must be fueled to move, and this can be achieved by using the fuel already inside the car on its spawn. To increase the amount of fuel a car has, the player can use a Gas Can or visit a Gas Station to refill a can with a pump, or refill the car itself. The fuel quantity is shown under the key command to enter the car and is expressed as a percentage.

Drivers cannot use weapons or builds, this is why the build and inventory menus are replaced with a speedometer and fuel indicator when driving. However, players in passenger seats can build and use their weapons however they must break the windows if they want to use their weapons inside the car.

All cars will deal damage to players if they are hit by a Car at high speed. The faster the car the more damage dealt. Players will be hit by a car taking immediate damage, and launched high into the air. Players take no extra damage on landing.

Cars come in four types, but each of them have different colors and variants. Each car has a base version, and a special version with a slightly altered model, with some cars having uniquely named versions (such as the Taxi) and others having unique skins (such as the Trask Transport). Wraps cannot be applied to Cars. All Cars are Common rarity.

All cars have access to Radio Stations and a Horn, the latter of which is activated by pressing the aim button.

Some cars have a yellow boot on the wheel and cannot be removed, these are cars that are static and not rideable. Cars can be harvested for Metal.

Types of Cars

There are four base car models in the game. Each new car is a version of one of these existing vehicles, and uses the same stats unless specified.

There are also several variants of cars, based on existing car models. So far, these variants have no changes in seats, starter fuel (aside from Mark 51) or HP. Usually they feature improved acceleration, except for the case of the 296, having better boost. "Everywhere" for this table means that it will have a chance to replace a standard model car.

Trivia

  • The Sedan shares a few similarities with some common sedans, such as the Subaru Impreza and some other sedans, the headlights look similar to that the Impreza and the body is based off of other sedans, the Taxi has headlights similar to that of a Dodge Neon. The Prevalent has a back seat and like other cars, windows that can be broken. The Promo shows it with a red paint job.
  • The model for the Prevalent was used as a prop around the map before Cars appeared in the game.
    • Included as one of these props was a Police Car. This was removed around May of 2020, in line with controversy surrounding police brutality which prompted the model's removal.
  • The OG Bear's appearance resembles that of the fifth generation of the Ford F-Series, specifically the 1971-72 F-Series Ford trucks.
  • At one point, there was a bug which would occur if a player drove off a high cliff. The player would repeatedly take damage and may be eliminated, with the vehicle being destroyed in the process. This was later patched.
  • The Whiplash's design seems to be mostly based off of the First Generation Lamborghini Countach, especially at the back.
  • While cars as a static prop existed since the beginning of Battle Royale, they had different models. Hitting them with a Harvesting tool would cause the car to trigger the anti-theft horn.
  • Cars can only be repaired by parking them near a Cozy Campfire while blown out tires can be replaced with Vehicle Mod: Off-Road Tires.
