Chapter 4: Season 1, also known as Season 23, was the twenty-third season of Fortnite: Battle Royale and the first season of Chapter 4. The season started on December 4th 2022, after the Asteria's Gaze unplayable period and concluded on March 9th 2023. The season's theme revolved around the Oathbound and medieval times in a newly forged island.
The season's main slogan is A New Beginning.
Previously, in Fortnite...[]
In Chapter 3: Season 4, a mysterious substance called "Chrome" appeared and started spreading on the island. The Herald of the Last Reality arrived, replacing the abandoned Sanctuary with Herald's Sanctum. Together, with the Nothing, she planned to use the Zero Point to chromify all Realities.
After planning for the whole season, The Herald finally began to destroy the island during a cutscene in the Fracture event. She managed to destroy Apollo and Artemis before destroying herself, leaving the Loopers to piece the island back together.
Welcome to Chapter 4[]
- Main Article: Fracture
The Loopers were ordered to collect Zero Point Fragments to initiate Zero Fusion. It was successful and the Zero Point slowly started to fuse fragments from other realities, rebuilding Reality Zero and the island, now called Asteria.
The Chapter 4 Storyline[]
The Ageless tasked Rift Warden Stellan to create a stable Rift Gate: a bridge to new realities. The Rift Gate is the Ageless' dearest wish. The Rift Warden also has his own reason to create it. There is a being: a Shapeless Man. He watches the Oathbound with dark purpose. If they don't finish the Rift Gate the consequences will be terrible. While Rift Warden Stellan is creating the Rift Gate, A.M.I.E does field research on the Rift Warden. A.M.I.E finds out that Stellan has officially harnessed inter-reality travel. A.M.I.E tries Stellan's Rift Gate. A.M.I.E embedded a bit of her code into those vessels and set up a test rift based on Stellan's design. The test rift is locked onto The Scientist and something horrible is happening to him. A.M.I.E needs to be ready for when the second Rift Gate goes online, to find The Scientist before it's too late.
Unfortunately, this could spell danger for the island. As far as we know, Rift Warden Stellan knows of The Nothing as he explains "there is a shapeless being." and opening the Rift Gate could lead us to the Chrome, possibly reviving The Herald in her tree form. As well as this, it could lead countless other realities to this one.

The Rift Warden came to the Oathbound with nothing, no family, no name. His work and his secrets have always been his own, until now. He came to the Oathbound at the order of the Shapeless Man. He yearns for a Rift Gate and if he fails... The Shapeless Man will destroy everything. Stellan cannot maintain the power needed to open the Rift Gate. He needs to advance the energy systems exponentially to handle this kind of demand. Raw Kinetic Ore, when undisturbed pulses with unimaginable power. Stellan captured enough energy to power the stars themselves. The energy is extremely unstable but The Shapeless Man is impatient. He must stabilize the energy long enough to power the Rift Gate. In order to channel the power into the Rift Gate he must forge a new alloy of Kinetic Ore. Stellan's dreams are filled with cold wind and The Shapeless Man's dark whispers. If the Rift Gate fails, Stellan fears his nightmares will devour his waking life.
The Ageless Champion has set Stellan's coordinates and soon, Stellan will attempt to open the gate. A.M.I.E knows that if The Scientist is facing "a fate darker than the worst imaginable" she will need a body built for the other side of that Rift Gate. A.M.I.E's upgrades include a pocket chainsaw, flamethrowers, a little cheese knife, and a jazzy piano. She draws up blueprints, but the stiff winds blew the plans clean out of A.M.I.E's printer tray. A.M.I.E finds her blueprints and picks up some computer chips on page 7. It's a model of the chip inside of the Guardian Shields. A.M.I.E doesn't know what's happening to The Scientist but she will find him and bring him back to the Island. And maybe, when she does, The Scientist will look at everything she has done and he'll finally see her as his superior. A.M.I.E says her goodbyes to us.
The Rift Warden says that "This Rift Gate could tear a permanent hole in Reality". The Rift Warden longs to tell The Ageless the truth of the Shapeless Man, but he cannot. Each night the Rift Warden dreams of stars, swallowed in darkness and the Shapeless Man waiting. Stellan claims to have not dreamed of him for centuries. Stellan does not wish for us to succeed, but we will suffer if we fail. Stellan can't sleep. The Shapeless Man's gaze burns into Stellan. The Shapeless Man doesn't care if the Rift Gate tears the island in two. Stellan asks us to turn on the Rift Gate and if it is unstable, the stars will determine our fate. The Rift Gate will not stabilize and Stellan can't shut it off. Someone has manipulated the coordinates for the Rift Gate. Stellan asks us to find our saboteur, demand answers and must know what is coming!
Stellan says the energy of the Rift Gate is destabilizing, saying it could rip open the entire sky and they have no idea what's on the other side. The gate is destroyed, the sky is torn. Everything may be ending. He asks us to take telescopes to the place he marked and look at the sky. The stars will decide the end, but Stellan says "Thank you for everything, my friend."

Trivia[]
- This season is the:
- fifth to start on a Sunday.
- All seasons since Chapter 3: Season 1 had started on a Sunday before this one.
- first since Season 1 to have the Battle Royale sub-title in the promotional material.
- first since Chapter 2: Season 1 to not feature a slogan in any promotional material.
- first since Chapter 2: Season 6 to have an original Level 100 Outfit.
- first to introduce more dynamic and longer idle animations for Outfits in the Lobby.
- first to introduce Midseason Drops.
- last to support Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on PC.
- fifth to start on a Sunday.
- This season reused the medieval theme from Chapter 1: Season 2, but developed it by adding vast amounts of medieval-related gameplay and locations.
- Mark Rein's teaser word for Chapter 4: Season 1 was "Cycle," hinting towards the addition of Dirt Bikes as drivable vehicles.
- The official Fortnite website had its address changed after the Update v23.20 Hotfix. Instead of being a subpage of the Epic Games website (www.epicgames.com/fortnite), it became its own domain (www.fortnite.com).
- There was large confusion regarding the end date of this season.
- Originally, the Battle Pass screen displayed the end date as March 10th 2023 but @FortniteStatus announced on February 15th 2023 that the season would instead end on March 8th 2023[2].
- However, various quests were set to end on March 10th and a teaser for the next season by @FortniteGame included "3.10.23"[3]. This resulted in users confusingly replying to the tweet.
- As a result, @FortniteStatus clarified that the next season would in fact start on March 10th[4], and the season ending date had previously been announced as March 8th since it was technically the last full day for some timezones[5].
- Despite this, the Battle Pass screen still displayed the end date as March 8th, perhaps because it was forgotten about.
