  3. Exclusive: Fortnite’s longtime lead creator Donald Mustard speaks about his epic run and what's next. April 22nd 2024. Game File: Mustard always wanted Fortnite’s island to be a meeting spot for different kinds of characters and a place to play a wide range of activities, not just battle royale. “Over six years, I wanted to tell the origin story basically of the metaverse,” he says, “Or of ‘What if there was a shared reality where you could just go and create and just be in this multiverse of possibilities?’” As part of that, he cooked up something called the “zero point,” an intersection of realities, where characters of different archetypes would converge. “I didn't dare to dream that I could ever do it with actual [intellectual property,]” he says. “I was just, like, I'll create my own superheroes. I'll create my own knights.” [...] Mustard wanted the island to feel like a mash-up. “I wanted to create a place that was basically like being out in the backyard when you were a kid in the 80’s, or playing with your toys on the playroom floor,” he says. “There was no one there saying, ‘Well, Spider-Man's allowed to this, and Batman's only allowed to do this. And Barbie can't hang out with Spiderman.’ I’m like, I want to create something where you can hang out with your friends and express yourself however you want.”
  4. How a nearly six-hour phone call with the Russo brothers changed Fortnite, and other stories. June 10th 2025. The Game Business: Joe and Anthony Russo spent five-and-a-half hours on the phone trying to convince Epic to allow Thanos into Fortnite. The Russo brothers directed Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, and they were eager to see the movies’ villain Thanos invade Fortnite in 2018. However, initially Epic’s chief creative officer Donald Mustard (who now works with the Russo brothers at their production company AGBO) was resistant to the idea. “It was Joe and Anthony who got together with Donald and convinced him to put those types of characters inside of Fortnite,” revealed AGBO’s president of interactive technology Pete Wanat, who was speaking as part of a panel at The Game Business Live. “Originally it was like, no, we are not interested in putting outside characters into Fortnite. And Joe and Anthony got together and had a phone call with Donald. It was supposed to be a half hour call, but five and half hours later, they were still talking about it. And Donald basically changed his mind. He said, ‘hey, you know what, we’re going to do this’. And after that, the world exploded about what kind of integrations you could have between film and TV and games.”
