This feature made purchases cheaper than buying from the Apple App Store which adds 30% to any purchase. It was used to buy V-Bucks for 30% less before the Mega Drop Discount hit. This is one of the factors that led to Apple removing Fortnite from the Apple Store and starting the #FreeFortnite movement.

Apple sued Epic Games for implementing the direct payment to Epic instead of following the rules with the 30% tax. Thus, Apple has blocked Fortnite, and iOS players can only play Season 3 while everyone else will be on the current season.. Moreover, iOS players will not be able to cross-play with friends who are in Season 4 or newer. Epic started a campaign in order to free Fortnite and make it playable for all devices.
Fortnite uploaded a parody of Apple's "Macintosh" commercial, which itself parodies the book title of the same name by George Orwell called Nineteen Eighty-Four.
