The Gas Can is a Ranged Fuel Item in Fortnite: Battle Royale. It was introduced in Chapter 2: Season 3.
Functionality[]
Gas Cans are used primarily to refuel different vehicles, but they can also be used as an improvised explosive device.
When used for refueling, pressing the attack button will pour fuel from the can and onto the ground. If the fuel stream connects with a vehicle, it will add the fuel to its tank. When reaching 0 fuel in the can, it is discarded from the inventory. Gas cans have no effect on vehicles which do not require fuel, and the gas will simply spray out without filing the vehicle.
It works the same as a Petrol Pump at a Gas Station, but portable. Gas cans can be refueled with one of these pump by holding the can whilst interacting with the pump.
When thrown, by holding the aim button and releasing, it can be easily relocated. Attacking the can with any weapon (including Melee Weapons) will cause it to ignite, and after around 1 second, it will explode, dealing large amounts of damage to nearby players and structures. This explosion will also start a fire. Gas Cans can also be shot out of a player's hand, causing them to drop it, with an explosion following. The character’s ears may briefly ring.
Obtained[]
Gas Cans can be found in various locations across the map. Oftentimes they are found at Bus Stops, but can also be found at Gas Stations or in areas with vehicles present. They are found as a prop, rather than a regular item (similar to a foraged item) in stacks of 1.
Stats[]
Gas Cans use Gas which cannot be obtained outside of the item's reserve. They can hold up to 100 fuel.
Gas Can (Common) | |
---|---|
Damage | 100 [1] |
Magazine Size | 100 |
Stack Size | 1 |
[1] The Damage dealt from a Gas Can will only apply when it explodes. This damage will only apply to opponents and yourself. Furthermore, the explosion cannot eliminate a player, as it will always leave them at 1 HP (The fire it produces however can eliminate any player).
Strategy Guide[]
- Gas Cans can be used as a Trap of sorts. Placing a Gas Can and shooting when a player is near will damage them significantly.
- If you are planning on using a vehicle for extended periods of time, having you or another player carry a Gas Can can allow for extended travel without stopping, as the can can be used whilst the vehicle is moving.
- A vehicle refuels faster when multiple players are refueling it with Gas Cans at the same time.

Trivia[]
- Gas Cans are unique in that they do not appear as a item when dropped or thrown, instead existing as world prop, similar to a Foraged Item (Although Foraged Items become item drops after collection unlike the Gas Can). Despite this, they can still be stored in the inventory.
- It is possible to force Gas Cans to appear as a holographic pickup in Creative by using the Add to Chest Functionality and then creating a Chest or Llama with them.
- Upon opening the created Chest or Llama, the Gas Can will drop as a holographic pickup.
- When aimed at the right angle, bullets will go through the handle.
- Making a Gas Can explode near a Cozy Campfire will cause the Campfire to ignite. This does not work after the Campfire extinguishes.
- You can ride a Gas Can that is thrown by a player.
- You can cause a Gas Can to explode in the air if you shoot it before it lands on the ground.
- You can attach to a Gas Can using a Grappler.
- Gas Cans are the only Ranged Fuel item in the game.
- The earliest version of the Gas Can (from Update v11.30) used to leave "bubbles" that would explode if they were shot, likely placeholders for gasoline puddles.[1] This feature was scrapped from the final version.
