Marking, also known as Pinging, is a Gameplay Mechanic in Fortnite: Battle Royale that was introduced in the Pre-Season and later expanded upon in Season 8.
Description[]
Marking refers to the action of highlighting an area or item for a player and their squad members. An area on the Map can be marked by pressing the Primary Fire button, or by pressing Mouse 3 (PC) , or Left D Pad (Console) by default. This will show a marker for the selected location for the entire squad.
Marking can also be used to highlight danger or enemies. This is achieved by pressing the mark button twice in quick succession, and with default settings, holding the aim button, and marking normally (this can be turned off).
Finally, regular marking via the mark button will highlight Items, interactable objects (such as Keycard Locks), Wildlife and Vehicles for the entire squad. Marking an item displays its rarity, as well as an icon of the item.
Placing a regular marker shows a light beam in the sky. This can be seen across the map and will fade as the player gets closer. Markers will disappear after a decent amount of time, and have a short cooldown before using them repeatedly. Players can mark whilst knocked, and place map markers whilst eliminated. Markers and danger markers will also display on the compass, but item marks will not.
A player's mark will match their associated color in team game modes. It is not known how the player order is assigned, but this is how it goes:
- 1st Player: Blue
- 2nd Player: Pink
- 3rd Player: Purple
- 4th Player: Yellow
- 5th Player: Green
- Other Players on the team: White
Markable Objects[]
The following is a list of items and objects that can be marked by the player:
- Every item that can be dropped, such as weapons, consumables or materials.
- Foraged items which are not present as items.
- Thrown items such as Pizza Party and Shield Kegs.
- Vehicles.
- Wildlife, but not all AI.
- Payphones and Phone Booths.
- Containers.
- Characters.
- Upgrade Benches and Vending Machines.
- Slurp Barrels.
- Slap Barrels.
- Slurp Trucks.
- Launch Pads or other placed traps.
- Alien Parasite Eggs.
- ???????????? (Location where a Runestone is deposited).
- Campfires.
A majority of placed items do not have the associated rarity when marked, as many will display as Common. This includes items such as the Launch Pad which is Epic and the Shield Keg which is Rare, both of which display as Common when marked.
Strategy[]
This section outlines a strategy. | |
---|---|
Feel free to add tips, tricks and general advice about the topic. |
- Players can easily gauge distances by marking a location and reading the distance shown. This can be useful for identifying how far the circle is, or to scale up for a Sniper Rifles Shot.
- If you cannot identify what an item is at range, but can only see its rarity glow, marking the item will show you what it is.
- This is easier achieved by turning off the setting to automatically make aimed marks as danger only.
- Be wary of how long your markers last, as a marked location may un-mark itself over a long time.
- Markers placed in the lobby and before landing on the island will automatically disappear once you land.

Trivia[]
- Marking a Slurp Barrel shows a bugged icon, as the icon is layered on top of the circular portrait, instead showing a square.
- This was adjusted in Chapter 3: Season 1.
- Cosmic Chests and Vaults will automatically mark themselves if within range of a player.
- Cosmic Chests use a unique light pink rarity color, not used by anything else.
- Vaults do not mark in the tradition sense, as they have no circle outline or attached rarity.
- If the player marks an item they can see but cannot pick up / other players cannot see, it will be marked as 'Item' with a default interaction icon and Common rarity.
