Fortnite's online tests were a series of closed Alpha tests that ran through late 2014 to mid-2017 before the games release. The online tests ran in Unreal Engine 4, unlike the current version which runs on UE5. Users were sent invitations by Epic Games to try out these versions under a now expired NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement). The first online test, OT1, began on December 2, 2014 and concluded on December 19. The final online test, OT11.1.0 was began on July 7, 2017 and concluded on July 15, ten days before the game entered early access. [1]
Out of all of the online tests, only Online Test 6.5 has been fully found, with Online Test 10.1 also being partially found. Due to the aforementioned NDA, very little videos and images can be found of these online tests, although all online tests from 2-11 were streamed live on Twitch and are still available to view today.
Gameplay[]
In the online tests, the missions were very much like how they are today, although they were slightly different with them later becoming the missions in the final game. The exception being weather the storm as that mode was scrapped.[2]
- Close the Gate (later became Fight the Storm as of OT7)
- Deliver the Goods (later became Deliver the Bomb as of OT11)
- Weather the Storm (OT5-OT5.5)
- Launch the balloon (later became Ride The Lightning!)
- Rescue the survivours
- Repair the shelter
- Evacuate the shelter
- Destroy the encampments
The "Defending the Fort" gameplay video released on July 8, 2014 showcased aspects of the Online Testing era.
- Instead of Ray, the player would be instructed by an individual that is internally known as "announcer", likely as a placeholder until Ashly Burch recorded her lines.
- The weak points were yellow instead of blue.
- Husks still retain their death animation from Project Fortress, with them exploding into bones as well as a purple puff of smoke.
- Atlases were called "power collectors" though in the same mission, the unseen male voice referred to them as "Atlas"
- Three players are seen playing as a constructor, soldier and ninja. The characters themselves were scrapped whilst the models were reused for B.A.S.E. Kyle, Ken and Ramirez. [3]
- Huskies had a slightly different hit animation.
- Spike traps had a different model.
- The aforementioned Atlas had a slightly different model and deploying animation.
User Interface[]
When logging on, the player was greeted with a full overview of the Homebase Lab/Buildings. There were four different main tabs that can be accessed including:
The UI took on a greenish color scheme compared to the current blue color scheme used throughout the game. Upon OT11, this was scrapped in favor of the current Homebase GUI.
The world map also had its own theme that contained stock radio chatter and HAM radio signals. It was removed around OT11. Part of this theme can still be heard in the Forest biome.[4]
