SHADOW is a Spy and Military Faction in Fortnite: Battle Royale, existing as one of the two divisions of Midas' crew, along with GHOST.
It was first introduced in Chapter 2: Season 1. SHADOW is under the direct authority and control of Midas, the original founder, but has also been managed by other higher ups, such as Brutus, Midas' right-hand man[1], Meowdas, Chaos Director and formerly Chaos Agent.
During Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, they offered the services of their agents to various clients such as Spillexx. They also established an illegal arms trafficking system, orchestrated numerous efforts at infiltrating opposing groups, and conducted experiments at both Slurpy Swamp and Steamy Stacks. Their most well known operation was waging war against GHOST, following the conflicts and rivalry between the teams in A.L.T.E.R. and E.G.O.
During Chapter 2 Remix, they were contracted by Snoop's Enterprise.
Overview[]
SHADOW is the first division of Midas' crew , and has existed long before GHOST, due to Midas having formed the group before the events of Chapter 2: Season 1. Their founding members were Chaos Origins, Sierra and The Burning Wolf, though they have expanded plenty since. From Chapter 2: Season 4 until Chapter 4: Season 1, SHADOW was mostly inactive, with many of the offline agents acting independently outside the faction, offering their services to more "current" organizations like the Imagined Order during Chapter 3: Season 2. They did, however, publicly become active again from Chapter 4: Season 1 and beyond.
In Chapter 5: Season 2, Marigold called back Midas' crew after she discovered Midas was in The Underworld, and both the major players from both SHADOW and GHOST reconciled their former grudges, reuniting the crew anew.
In Chapter 2 Remix, two agents are revealed to co-lead SHADOW, Meowdas and Chaos Director, the later being Chaos Agent's boss and the one who granted him authority over the faction back in Chapter 2. SHADOW, along with GHOST, were also contracted by Snoop's Enterprise to protect their bases.

History[]
Before Chapter 2[]
Midas founded his crew at an unknown time in an unknown reality[23]. Through his covert skills, he set his sights on building an empire of espionage, intrigue, and conquest. For this he recruited three people with great potential to his cause:
- The first was The Burning Wolf, a former knight believed to be a legend by soldiers, and who attacked Midas' crew[24]; known as Midas' first enforcer.
- The second was Chaos Agent, then known as Chaos Origins, a mad scientist who once defeated The Burning Wolf[25], and tried to dominate the world before being stopped by Midas himself; known as Midas' first redeemed.
- The third was Sierra, a fighter who lost her family and seeks revenge on the perpetrators; known as Midas' first pardoned.
Chapter 2: Season 1[]
After an unknown period of time, a new faction appeared in Midas' crew, named GHOST, which quickly became rivals with SHADOW. The Imagined Order recruits the services of GHOST to study and map Apollo[26]. Unbeknownst to GHOST at the time, SHADOW had already begun engaging in various operations on the island.
- A.L.T.E.R. team members present on Apollo before E.G.O.'s interference are involved in the trade and marketing of weapons at Dirty Docks[27], and have established links with the companies Slurp Co.[28] and Kevolution Energy.[29]
- Chaos Agent watches and masterminds everything from his secret lair on the goings-on between A.L.T.E.R./SHADOW and E.G.O./GHOST.
- He is interested in the REDACTED Bunker[30].
- Chaos Agent also experiments with Sludges, and builds an army to hunt down the E.G.O. team across Apollo.
The E.G.O. team from GHOST and the A.L.T.E.R. team from SHADOW began entering into conflicts which triggered infighting among Midas' crew. A.L.T.E.R. agents started to oppose the members of E.G.O. and deliberately chased them down, with Rippley being one of their main targets.
Later in the season, Midas selects Eye Land as the new grounds for the main base of GHOST, likely aware of the Zero Point stationed underneath it. Simultaneously, construction on five SHADOW Safe Houses around the island begins.
Chapter 2: Season 2[]
Midas founded The Agency, his employment organization for spies from both the factions of GHOST and SHADOW. The organization has its headquarters of the same name built on Eye Land. Conflicts between SHADOW and GHOST escalate, and grow into an all-out Spy War.
- Several spy bases were in operation across Apollo at this time: The Agency, The Grotto, The Shark, The Rig, and The Yacht. Besides the safehouses, however, there were no major compounds with public allegiance to SHADOW.
With The Agency now built, and tension arisen between the two, the war between GHOST and SHADOW begins in full.
While Meowscles controlled The Yacht for GHOST, there were three members of Midas' crew who had not yet chosen their allegiance and remained neutral at the beginning: Brutus, TNTina and Skye.
However, throughout the season, the balance of power between GHOST and SHADOW changed enormously:
- Brutus was the first operative to choose SHADOW, and it became their Headquarters. He remained the only SHADOW operative of Midas' Crew to maintain full control of his spy base.
- TNTina joined SHADOW and was primarily responsible for the ownership and destruction of The Rig, spilling oil into the ocean.
- Unexpectedly, Meowscles decided to betray GHOST for SHADOW, causing GHOST to send in Contract Giller and Deadpool to reclaim The Yacht for them. Meowscles, now a SHADOW operative, was then sent to the Box Factory.
- Deadpool was granted authority for GHOST over The Yacht in Meowscles' absence.
- Skye was the last of Midas' main crew to choose a side, and with SHADOW roaming rampant, she transformed her Shark into a prison HQ for GHOST.
During the war, Midas gradually worked on a Doomsday Device with his daughter Jules made to break free from The Storm. This Device was located in his room, directly underneath The Agency, and possibly right above The Zero Point. Midas' room housed several things that hinted at his involvement behind the scenes:
- A journal could be found in his room containing a drawing of Oro's scepter, as well as a sketched symbol representing the Storm.
- A suit similar to that of Tempest's was also spotted in the room, its purpose likely being to defy the Storm, and either giving Midas control over it, or immunity to its effects.
- This suit, that would later become Cyclo, could have also been found at The Rig.
Near the end of the season, Renegade Shadow storms The Agency for SHADOW’s conquest. Countdowns for the activation of Midas' Device began appearing in the Agency and in Midas' own room.
The Device[]
The Device was activated on June 15, 2020. Upon its initiation, Midas' voice and several other Henchmen voices could've been heard as it executed its functions to try and push The Storm back, destroying much of The Agency.
- When The Looper was temporarily brought out of the loop, files concerning Midas, Jules and another agent Lynx were spotted in Agent Jones' office, meaning that IO had long since been investigating him and his associates.
The Device's plan ultimately failed, and the Storm attacked The Device in retaliation, and turned into a giant Wall of Water. After the event, Midas publicly reappears aligned with SHADOW, and controls what's left of The Agency for the now opposing faction - though he remains the de facto leader of GHOST.
Chapter 2: Season 3[]
The giant Wall of Water created by The Storm collapsed, flooding the entire Island. The headquarters of SHADOW are now The Authority, a larger version of The Agency re-constructed by Jules, and implemented a large anti-flood wall that surrounds the compound. Midas was attacked by a Loot Shark.
- Due to the flooding of the island, The Grotto & The Rig are no longer fit for use as a bases for SHADOW and are therefore abandoned. All former SHADOW bases and safehouses, save for The Authority, have also become defunct.
- The Box Factory, formerly under Meowscles' jurisdiction, has turned into Catty Corner under control of his son, Kit.
SHADOW continues the war against GHOST who built The Fortilla as their new headquarters, albeit less aggressively. They kept them outnumbered until the end of the season.
Chapter 2: Season 4[]
Both The Authority and The Fortilla have been completely abandoned, and the war between GHOST and SHADOW seems to have ended, with many members now working for themselves[33], waiting to return online[13] again., pursuing other goals.
- The last remaining SHADOW Henchman on Apollo spends much of the season parading about with a newfound friend, an equally lone GHOST Henchman- becoming the Henchbros.
Chapter 2: Season 5[]
SHADOW, still inactive, is investigated by detective Sleuth, who seeks to hunt down all the agents of both SHADOW and GHOST,[34]. Sleuth is ultimately unsuccessful.
Marigold, a member of Midas' crew, arrives on the island, and just like Midas, she is cursed with the Golden Touch. In her quests, she mentions that someone was spending Midas' gold, and recruited the services of The Looper for revenge.
Chapter 2: Season 6[]
Marigold along with several GHOST and SHADOW henchmen went to collect something.
Chapter 2: Season 7[]
Marigold is in on a secret plan with Midas and Jules[35], as she looks for a getaway driver.
For Cosmic Summer, Midas reappears with other agents of his crew, including Jules and Brutus, for an undercover mission.
- After this, Midas handed over his Crew to Brutus[36], and went offline for then unknown reasons. Marigold has tried to find him since then.
We also learn that SHADOW agents infiltrated and sabotaged The Bridge of the Imagined Order.
Chapter 2: Season 8[]
The First Shadows reappeared for unspecified reasons..
Chapter 3: Season 2[]
During the War against The Seven, several SHADOW members have joined the ranks of the Imagined Order:
- Chaos Agent
- Renegade Shadow
- Abstrakt
- Hush
- Wild Card
- Zadie
- and Jules. The IO is then defeated by The Resistance, leaving SHADOW agents who joined them to find new employers or a new 'job'.
Chapter 4: Season 1[]
Many former and current members of SHADOW have joined one of two organizations: Cold Blooded or Most Wanted. The former faction guards vaults all over the island, and the latter is wishing to rob them.
- The Double Agents joined Cold Blooded while Renegade Shadow, Zadie, Metal Mouth, Stingray, Abstrakt and SHADOW Enforcer(s) joined the Most Wanted.
- The Double Agents may have been double agents for the Most Wanted, as they have been replaced after the vaults they protected were robbed.
Jules decided to join Oathbound in order to learn about their technology.
Chapter 4: Season 3[]
Because of his loss of income, Riptide teamed up with his Alter-ego from long ago: Turk, to capture the Coral Buddies and sell them. This caused them to come into conflict with the people of Atlantis.[37]
Shortly after Turk and Riptide fail, Stingray, under orders from Chaos Agent, contacts Meowscles to tell him they have work to do.[38]
- Stingray later relocates to Lonely Labyrinth, the place he keeps his loot, as well as Stellan's Refined Kinetic Ore schematic. The schematic was later stolen from him by The Looper.
Chaos Agent enjoys some outdoor activities and exploration.
Chapter 4: Season 4[]
Renegade Shadow, who has become an expert as a heist crew leader, is looking for a new crew to rob the Eclipse Hotel.[39] Other SHADOW agents are also involved in the heists, including:
- Meowscles
- Abstrakt
- SHADOW Enforcer(s)
- and Stingray, who was forced to relocate anyway after Lonely Labyrinth disappeared.
Chapter 5: Season 2[]
Upon finding clues as to the whereabouts of Midas, Marigold calls former agents and friends of his break him out of The Underworld. Jules, TNTina, Skye, Meowscles and Brutus - the current leader of Midas' crew - reform the old gang with the help of Marigold and her enlisted ally The Looper, search for Midas' underworld cell, only to discover he had already broken free himself. With the forces of The Society dwindling, and the new back together, SHADOW Agents take back control over The Marigold as their ticket out, and the tentative new home base for Midas and his crew.
- Midas has suspicions that Brutus, has betrayed him, so he sends the Looper to confirm Brutus' loyalty [36]. The Looper finds that Brutus has remained loyal, and so he hands control of the Crew back to Midas. [1]
- Marigold has also asked Jules to study the Chains of Hades with The Looper to help Midas to seal his Golden Touch. She discovers a mysterious "Essence" in the Underworld's gates, and uses it to start work on new "Gauntlets" which allow Midas to seal and unseal his Golden Touch at will.[11]
Midas sets his sights on escaping the island with The Marigold, wary of Hades' wrath and retaliation. Midas' goal is a fruitful voyage on his yacht to expand his empire somewhere else outside of the island for his mighty ambitions. While Brutus prepares The Marigold to leave with Midas[40], his top agents create distractions across Helios that allow his escape mission to succeed.[41] Midas hides out on Spawn Island, away from Hades, waiting for the plan to succeed.
Following the successful heist, Midas' Crew all collectively set forth on their voyage into the ambitious unknown, and have - for the foreseeable future - left the world of Fortnite: Battle Royale. However, some operatives of SHADOW remain on the island, with assignable SHADOW Briefings continuing to be offered, even around newer locations as the chapter progresses.
Chapter 5: Season 4[]
GHOST's primary Bases, The Shark and The Agency, were spray painted on Restored Reels by Hope. However, the spray paint has all of the GHOST logos painted over, with a SHADOW logo presented on the front of The Agency.
Chapter 2 Remix[]
Arriving in an alternate version of Apollo, SHADOW settled on the island and have taken back many of the bases originally under their control. Two high-ranking officers appear:
- The first is Chaos Director, the boss of Chaos Agent and Director of SHADOW, has taken back control of SHADOW's agents after realizing it was a mistake to give Chaos Agent the reigns.[42]
- The other is Meowdas,Boss of SHADOW, now operating from The Yacht with SHADOW Henchmen instead of GHOST Henchmen.
- Dynamo TNTina has also regained control of The Rig, as a remixed SHADOW Agent, and sports SHADOW Henchmen to boot.
- Lastly in the season, Kit regained control over the Box Factory.
There are several key differences between their control over the island now versus in Chapter 2: Season 2, mainly - several previously key-locations for SHADOW are under GHOST control, namely The Agency and The Grotto.
Chaos Director, Meowdas and Dynamo TNTina were activated as agents for Snoop's Enterprise.Recruitment[]
Beginning in Chapter 2: Season 2, SHADOW practiced an aggressive recruitment campaign against their apparent rival faction GHOST. After the season, SHADOW had adopted a more low-key persistence in their recruiting, with their "SHADOW WANTS YOU" posters being able to be found across Apollo for the entire chapter.
Many such posters were replaced by others (such as those welcoming/celebrating the Aliens in Believer Beach, or those advertising the cars introduced in Lazy Lake). Alternatively, some were outright removed. The locations of all posters were as follows:
- Two in Pleasant Park, being on the sides of southwestern-most green house and the gas station
- Three in Frenzy Farm
- The side of the center building in Lazy Lake
- Two in Holly Hedges, being on the southwest-most brick building and in the parking lot of the center shop
- Two in Sweaty Sands, being on the southwest brick building and behind the SoFDeeZ
- Many inside The Authority
- The back of the Gas N' Grub
- Two on the sides of Building 2 in Steamy Stacks

Trivia[]
- Before Chapter 5: Season 2 it was only speculation that GHOST and SHADOW were two factions of the same organization.
- At an unknown period of time, GHOST was integrated into SHADOW and Midas' crew now act under the name SHADOW.
- Nods like the Emoticon Ghosts of the Past have alluded to this conclusion without outright confirming it.
- SHADOW's logo is mistakenly believed to represent Chaos Agent's mask because of a striking resemblance between the two.
- According to the game files codenames, it actually represents a skull.
- A.L.T.E.R is incorrectly considered to be the former name of the organization, when it refers only to the original team of agents sent during the events of Chapter 2: Season 1, they are distinguished from other SHADOW agents by the fact that they all have an alter-ego in the E.G.O team from GHOST.
- Every Motorboat seems to have the SHADOW logo on them, despite them officially being able to bear the GHOST logo, as seen in the Loading Screen "Dive!".
- Shadow Safe Houses are named after the first 5 letters of the NATO phonetic alphabet, those being Alpha, Beta, Charlie, Delta and Echo.
