Lore[]
Gold Knox first meets Riggs with a sarcastic attitude, demanding to know who's in charge at Homebase. When Riggs tries to explain his role, Knox dismisses him as unimportant and walks away. Dennis, overhearing the conversation, grows suspicious of Knox due to his missing personnel files and begins to suspect he could be dangerous. Meanwhile, Knox starts pestering Dennis for answers, frustrated by the lack of clear leadership, and eventually gets sent to Lars' flying van as part of a chore wheel task.
Dennis later discovers a personnel file identifying Knox as dangerous, with traits like narcissism and a fixation on authority. Despite this, Lars decides to give Knox a chance, allowing him to fix damage on his van and even suggesting he might have potential as a hero. Knox, while still aggressive, shows signs of wanting to be useful and struggles to navigate Homebase's unconventional leadership structure. He hints at his past as a database administrator who used force in his work, leaving Lars both intrigued and cautious.
Lars officially nominates Knox for advanced hero training, to which Lars clarifies by saying he means "the scary one" and "the one with the mask". Dennis expresses confusion about Knox's apparent shift from Core Game Knox to Sgt. Tank Gatling, who was previously just a lawyer, also had a similar transformation. Riggs, however, shuts down the conversation, refusing to engage in further discussion about identity changes and referencing the Homebase syllabus that emphasizes the importance of self-examination and reinvention. He then shifts the conversation to Lars' request to train Knox, which Riggs initially rejects, citing concerns about having someone with a criminal background—though Lars corrects him, stating Knox was a "database administrator"—wandering Homebase armed with advanced weaponry.
Lars argues that both he and Ray saw something redeeming in Knox, reminding Riggs that Homebase is about giving people second chances. Riggs reluctantly agrees, but only on the condition that if things go wrong, everyone will place the blame on Ray. The group, including a suddenly appearing Cloaked Star, unanimously agrees.
Despite some hesitation, the team—joined by Cloaked Star—supports Knox's development, shifting focus back to their mission of hunting mist monsters, rescuing survivors, and on a lighter note, finding toilet paper.
Riggs gathers the team to discuss Knox's progress, and Cloaked Star confirms that Knox is ready. Dennis, Lars, and even THERAPY-Bot are in agreement to retest Knox. THERAPY-Bot volunteers to proctor the test, which involves retrieving an answer booklet from the husks. When the results come in, however, THERAPY-Bot announces that Knox has failed. This leads Riggs to express disappointment, only for THERAPY-Bot to claim that Riggs, Dennis, Lars, and Cloaked Star have also failed their psychological profiles. The only one who passed is Jess, who nonchalantly suggests meditation and doesn't seem concerned about Knox's outcome.
In the end, Knox passes his hero training and is tasked with choosing his class. Dennis humorously struggles to guide him, and after some indecision, Knox decides to follow his instincts and embrace his new role. Despite the challenges, Knox is officially recognized as a hero, ready to carve out his own path in Homebase.
