Seasons in Fortnite: Battle Royale are themed periods of time where you can purchase and earn rewards through a Battle Pass, partake in special events, and play Limited Time Modes. Typically, a season lasts around 90 days. Each season brings new features, map changes, events, cosmetics, and a new Battle Pass to the game, keeping gameplay fresh.

Every season since Season 2 has had a Battle Pass. Battle Passes are special offers that allow players to progress through 100 Levels (formerly known as tiers), earning new cosmetics as they level up.

There have been many additions to Battle Royale, including features and lore events.
Chapter 1[]
Pre-Season[]
This season took place before seasons were properly introduced to Battle Royale. It took place after the introduction of Fortnite: Battle Royale as a game mode, and ended a few weeks later at the start of Season 1. No cosmetics were available at this time, players had to use the Recruit Outfits and Default Cosmetic Items.
The Zapotron was introduced as a weapon at this time, but it was quickly vaulted after 30 minutes. The reasoning behind this is not clear.
Season 1[]
In Season 1, the Item Shop and Season Shop were introduced, making it possible for players to purchase Cosmetic Items. Some cosmetic items (such as Renegade Raider) could have been obtained by levelling up, similar to the concept of the Battle Pass.
This was the first official season of Battle Royale, and from this point Patch Notes were introduced, which meant that the game would be getting updated from time to time. The Ceiling Zapper and Wall Dynamo were completely removed from the games, and the rarities of several items such as Medkits changed.
Season 2[]
In Season 2, the Battle Pass was introduced, along with Battle Pass Tiers, which meant that if players purchased the Battle Pass, they would earn a Cosmetic Item every time they gained a Battle Pass Tier. The maximum tier was Tier 70, where players could unlock the Black Knight Outfit.
A number of Locations as well as Items were introduced in this season, which included the Chug Jug and Tilted Towers. Seasonal themes were also introduced, the theme for this season revolving around Medieval.
Season 3[]
In Season 3, the season got a whole new, unique Battle Pass, meaning that this concept was going to continue throughout all seasons. The theme for this season mainly revolved around Space Exploration, and Meteors.
The Fortnite Storyline also started this season, with a Meteor appearing in the sky around the middle of the season, as well as lots of small meteorites crashing into the island. Items and Locations were also introduced, such as the Guided Missile, and Lucky Landing.
Season 4[]
In Season 4, the location Dusty Depot was replaced with Dusty Divot after the meteor crashed into the location. Hop Rocks were scattered around this location, and a Movie Production Studio appeared near Moisty Mire. The theme for this season revolved around Superheroes
The first official Fortnite Collaboration appeared this season, with the introduction of the Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mode, as well as the first ever Mythic item, the Infinity Gauntlet (Which was exclusive to the LTM).
Season 5[]
In Season 5, the location Moisty Mire was replaced with Paradise Palms, as well as a desert biome. The theme for this season was Worlds Collide, and Rifts (Objects that let you teleport to the sky and redeploy your glider) were introduced.
There were a lot of updates this season, and a lot of Cosmetic Items, Items, and Weaponry were introduced (i.e. Grappler, Llama Bell, Tomato Temple). The Getaway event took place this season.
Season 6[]
In Season 6, the Fortnite Storyline was at a high point. The Cube lifted a Floating Island, causing Corrupted Areas to appear throughout the map. The theme for this season revolved around Halloween/Darkness/Corruption, and was called "Darkness Rises".
Fortnitemares was introduced this season. Cube Monsters started to appear all over the map, and an exclusive LTM was created. Balloons, Quadcrashers and Quad Launchers were introduced this season.
Season 7[]
The theme for Season 7 was seasonal. It revolved around winter, and a snowy biome was added to the island, along with Polar Peak, Frosty Flights, and Happy Hamlet. A whole new section of the Fortnite Storyline was introduced this season, along with the first Mythic item not to appear in an LTM, the Infinity Blade.
Fortnite: Creative, a whole new gamemode, was introduced. This gamemode let you create your own Island, and build basically anything you wanted by using Prefabs, Galleries and Devices, as well as toggling the new Island Settings.
The Block was introduced this season. This allowed players to go onto Creative Mode and build their own location to be featured on the Battle Royale Island. A whole new chest was introduced as well, the Block Chest.
Season 8[]
In Season 8, the theme revolved around Pirates and Adventure. A new tropical and volcanic biome was added to the North East section of the map, along with Sunny Steps and Lazy Lagoon. The Prop-O-Matic/Prop gun, Flashlight Pistol and other Creative Exclusive Items were introduced.
The first Live Event that players decided the outcome of took place this season, The Unvaulting Event. Players got the opportunity to pick one item that should be unvaulted, and they chose the Drum Gun. This weapon was vaulted again in Season X.
Season 9[]
In Season 9, the theme revolved around The Future, with the description "The Future Is Yours". Neo Tilted, Mega Mall and Pressure Plant were all locations added to the island. Slipstreams were also added across the map, as well as large, mechanical drones., a new type of cosmetic, were added. These allowed players to carry two Harvesting Tools in both of their hands, instead of one. This feature has been included in every Battle Pass since.
Season X[]
This season was the final season of Chapter 1. The theme for Season X revolved around time travel, as lots of unexpected locations began to appear scattered across the map. The B.R.U.T.E., a new robotic vehicle was introduced to the game.
Rift Zones, a new form of location, were introduced. Each rift zone was unique, for example Retail Row had Monsters, Greasy Grove was taken over by Guaco, and Neo Tilted was replaced with Tilted Town and Gotham City.
The season and the chapter ended with The End event, when the Meteor impacted The Zero Point at Loot Lake, containing Reality Zero leaving a Black Hole.
Chapter 2[]
Season 1[]
Chapter 2: Season 1 brought a whole new Chapter to Fortnite, as well as a new Battle Royale Island, the Apollo island, a few days after The End event took place. Additionally, the whole Battle Pass concept got a complete revamp, allowing players to progress through an infinite amount of tiers.
The loot pool got a revamp, with a lot of weapons and items being vaulted and unvaulted, as well as the Bandage Bazooka and Motorboat being introduced. This was the longest season of Fortnite, lasting from October 2019 to February 2020.
Season 2[]
The theme for Chapter 2: Season 2 revolved around spies and secret agents, as well as the war between GHOST and SHADOW. Five new locations appeared, each containing a boss with a Mythic item; each being a stronger version of the Legendary variant of that item. Travis Scott's Astronomical also took place this season.
Henchmen were introduced. They will appear at spy bases, spawning randomly and eliminating all players. Faction Locked Chests were introduced, as well as Secret Passageways and Disguise Boxes.
Season 3[]
In Chapter 2: Season 3, the entire map was flooded in water, after the Wall Of Water collapsed. New Mythic items became available, but this time each boss dropped two of them. Throughout the season, the water level kept shrinking. There was even a small live event that players could trigger near Craggy Cliffs.
Cars and Radio Stations were introduced. These allowed players to traverse the map, and listen to music that is either made by Epic Games, or by real life music artists.
Season 4[]
Chapter 2: Season 4 was the first ever crossover season, where Fortnite did a crossover with Marvel. New bosses that dropped Mythic Superpowers appeared, as well as a marvel themed Battle Pass. Frenzy Farm was replaced with Upstate New York and Stark Industries.
Marvel exclusive LTMs, Car Racing and more features appeared throughout this season, until The Devourer of Worlds event occurred, and the Zero Point became exposed.
Season 5[]
The theme for Chapter 2: Season 5 mainly revolved around Bounty Hunters. A desert biome appeared around the Zero Point. Different Characters started to appear around different locations on the island, with some selling Exotic items.
Reality Logs, IO Guards, Zero Point Portals and more features have been appearing this season. A significant number of collaborations occurred, such as Lazarbeam, The Grefg and more.
Season 6[]
Chapter 2: Season 6 brought Crafting and tamable Animals into Fortnite. A primal biome appeared at the center of the map, and new items such as the Makeshift Shotgun and the Primal Stink Bow became available to obtain throughout the island.
Season 7[]
Chapter 2: Season 7 was focused on a "war" between the Aliens that have invaded the Island, and the Imagined Order. Saucers are added and are piloted by Trespassers, who also patrol select locations. Holly Hedges has been transformed into Holly Hatchery. Three named locations were abducted by The Mothership, removing structures and pieces of land from the Island.
Season 8[]
Chapter 2: Season 8 was the final season of Chapter 2. It revolves around The Cube, which returned after 12 seasons. After Operation: Sky Fire which destroyed The Mothership, Purple Cubes crashed into the Island which spread corruption. Two new types of Cubes appeared in this season, the Blue Rebooted Cube and the Golden Cube. The Rebooted Cube was a Purple Cube until it was rebooted by loopers inside The Mothership. The Golden Cube awakened the Purple Cubes which spawned smaller purple cubes, and lead them to the center of the Island, forming The Convergence which turned into The Pyramid. The Cube Queen emerges from the Golden Cube, preparing to spead corruption and to contain the Island.
The Cube Monsters return and is known as Cube Legion with new monsters and a larger "boss" monster known as the Caretaker.
Chapter 3[]
Season 1[]
Chapter 3: Season 1 was the first season on the new Artemis Island (The Looper teamed with The Seven to flip over Apollo), with The Cube Queen & Cube Monsters presumed defeated.
Season 2[]
Chapter 3: Season 2 developed the war between The Seven and the Imagined Order with new vehicles like a drivable Battle Bus and new features such as Mantling and Sprinting.
Season 3[]
Chapter 3: Season 3, named Vibin', followed the conclusion of Collision. Doctor Slone, has been lost and the Resistance has won the war with help from the Paradigm.
Season 4[]
Chapter 3: Season 4 has the island progressively taken over by The Herald and Chrome, transforming POIs and turning players, objects, and weapons into chrome. The Nothing is directly introduced, its will done through the chrome.
Chapter 4[]
Season 1[]
Chapter 4: Season 1 followed the Fracture live event. The Zero Point combines elements of other realities to create the Asteria Island, under which the Zero Point lies dormant. A snapshot of Geno, The Ageless, reigns over The Citadel & has The Looper construct a portal which is later destroyed by The Looper in cooperation with AMIE.
Season 2[]
Chapter 4: Season 2 introduced Mega City to the map, along with new vehicles & grind rails. With The Ageless' disappearance, factions sprung up, each seeking power. The Peace Syndicate recruited The Looper to maintain peace between the factions and investigate missing files, thought to have been corrupted by Triarch Nox.
Season 3[]
Chapter 4: Season 3 introduced new Jungle biome as a result of collapse in the middle area of the Island with new Augments, rideable Raptors, new weapons and more. Slone has returned and is investigating the ruins of The Ancients.
Season 4[]
The season begins as the sun becomes eclipsed by the moon. Vampire Kado Thorne took up residence in Asteria, draining the island's wealth and treasures to finance luxury properties: Sanguine Suites, Eclipsed Estate, and Relentless Retreat. A team consisting of Nolan Chance, Piper Pace, Fish Thicc, Mae, Antonia, and Khaby Lame attempts to infiltrate the Eclipsed Estate and steal Throne's prized treasures to take back what belongs to the island and, more importantly, foil Thorne's ultimate plan. The fate of the island is at stake, and theft is the last resort.
Season OG[]
Chapter 4: Season OG - the Athena Island from Season 5 is brought back replacing the Asteria Island, The Athena Island brings back many old POI's such as Tilted Towers, Junk Junction & Fatal Fields, and bringing back many OG locations, and landmarks.
Chapter 5[]
Season 1[]
Chapter 5: Season 1 - The Big Bang created multiple new galaxies with one of them containing a new world (Helios) where the inhabitants of Asteria could take refuge. Sometime later in that new world, Jones became a member of The Underground faction after learning that Peely had been kidnapped by The Society.
Season 2[]
Chapter 5: Season 2 - Myths & Mortals, brought The Underworld and Olympus to the island upon the opening of Pandora's Box along with Greek gods (Aphrodite, Ares, Artemis, Hades, Nike, Zeus) and monsters (Cerberus & Medusa).
Season 3[]
Chapter 5: Season 3 - Wrecked, was started by Zeus's destruction of the gemstone on Pandora's box which caused an encroaching sandstorm that transformed the south into a barren desert. Attachable vehicle parts via mod crates and the Nitro power-up were introduced.
