In Fortnite there are eight Server Regions (also known as Matchmaking Region). Players can freely change server regions in the Game Settings. The default setting is Auto, where the game connects the player to the nearest server region as it offers the lowest Ping (a measure of latency). When playing as a group, the game connects to the server region the Party Leader is in when selecting a playlist.
In the Battle Royale Lobby, the server region the player is connected to is indicated in the top right corner below the amount of V-Bucks. The server region is indicated in Save the World in the Map tab when selecting a mission, on the bottom right.
Tournaments that are not region locked (such as Cash Cups) allows players to compete in the same tournament in different regions. Region locked tournaments only allow players to compete in the server region the player designates as their 'home region'.
