Shadows are playable Monsters in Fortnite: Battle Royale. They are remains of once living Loopers that have been reanimated by Shadow Midas. They are available in the Fortnitemares 2020 Playlists, having the ability to earn their own Victory, a Nitemare Royale. This is achieved by eliminating all real players in a match.
Shadows can consume loot to regain health, and stand still for a period of time to conceal themselves from view, with only their eyes being visible.
They returned for the Impossible Escape! Limited Time Mode in Chapter 2: Season 6, as "Daybreak Ghosts" that try to eliminate the player at night.

Shadows have 4 abilities they can use.

Shadows could consume items, weapons and materials - this enabled them to heal over a period of time. Consuming Bandages, Medkits, Shield Potions and Shadow Midas' Drum Gun granted the longest healing periods.
When eliminated, Shadows dropped everything they had consumed. Additionally, they launch players and other shadows like a Shockwave Grenade when they die.
As a shadow, you were typically immune to Shadow Midas and the Ghostly GHOST Henchmen in Fortnitemares 2020. However, if you attacked them, they would become hostile to you.
Trivia[]
- Its codename is "Arsenic".
- Its gameplay was first leaked in Chapter 2: Season 2.
- Several features were given to Shadows to make them scarier and more realistic:
- When a player emoted as a Shadow, the audio of the emote would be distorted and weird.
- Players as Shadows could communicate to teammates who were not shadows, but their voices in voice chat would sound demonic.
- Shadows could "Possess" vehicles, which was the same as driving them, but they add a purple glow to said vehicle.
- There was a bug with the Snikt! emote where you could use your equipped Harvesting Tool as a shadow. This was later fixed by disabling the emote as a Shadow.

AI[]
Daybreak Ghosts were hostile AIs exclusive to the Impossible Escape! LTM. They spawned in stacks of 3-5 during the second night and attacked players on sight with the abilities of the Fortnitemares Shadows.
They would die instantly when eliminated, sending nearby players flying with a Shockwave effect. They didn’t drop any loot.
