Sideways Anomalies were a Gameplay Mechanic in Fortnite: Battle Royale. It was introduced in Chapter 2: Season 8.
Description[]
Sideways Anomalies come in 2 categories: a singular Sideways area on one Named Location per game, or Sideways Encounters.
The Sideways does not let players build, but lowers player gravity in return. Cube Monsters will spawn in here, as well as Sideways Chests, which can drop a Sideways Rifle or Sideways Minigun. Players can still break structures in the sideways, and when leaving, the Cube Monsters inside cannot follow them. Players cannot see or shoot into the Sideways from the outside, and must enter it to interact.
Sideways Zone[]
Each game one named location will be home to a large orange sphere, which contains the sideways. Inside, all chests (Except Rare Chests and IO Supply Chests) will become Sideways Chests, which drop double the loot, and can contain a Sideways Rifle or Minigun. Cube Monsters will continuously spawn here, and when eliminated, drop Cube Monster Parts, which can be used to upgrade Sideways Weaponry. Also in the location are red colored geysers, the so-called Corruption Vents, which will launch the player high into the air and allow for Glider Redeploy. Players can enter and exit the Sideways location at any point, and the Monsters inside will not follow them.
Sideways Encounter[]
Across the map are three Sideways Anomalies, which act as small boss fights for the player to attempt. When activated, a Sideways area will appear, and Cube Monsters will begin to spawn. Players must eliminate as many Cube Monsters are possible in order to continuously increase the time limit, with the monsters increasing in HP as it continues. Eventually, a Boss enemy may spawn, such as Cube Assassin or an IO Guard, and these will need to be defeated to gain the highest tier loot. Three Sideways Chests will spawn in the area, and any existing chests will be converted once the anomaly is activated. If the player fails to eliminate Cube Monsters in time, the anomaly will end prematurely.
The more enemies the player eliminates, the higher tier loot they will receive, usually in the form of an upgraded Sideways Minigun or Rifle.

History[]
Chapter 2: Season 8[]
- Update v18.00: Added Sideways Locations and Anomalies.
Chapter 3: Season 1[]
- Update v19.00: Removed Sideways Locations and Anomalies.
Trivia[]
- Sideways Anomalies were disabled shortly after addition due to an issue.
- Players who entered the anomaly would have a very high latency during the event, and when it concluded, players would be unable to properly move, constantly moving back to the location they attempted to move from (Rubber Banding). As such they were disabled temporarily.
- Players who are outside of a Sideways Bubble can identify opponents who are inside by using a Recon Scanner. They will still be unable to attack them unless they enter the bubble however.
- The IO Guard that could appear was not sided with the Sideways Monsters and would shoot at them upon spawn, diverting attention away from the player if he isn't focused on them. This could have been helpful when dealing with tougher enemies like the Mega Brute or Cube Assassin.

Chapter 2: Season 8[]

Trivia[]
- The Last Reality, The Sideways and Storm King Realm may be a single Reality.
- Umbrella of the Last Reality and Graveyard Drift Quest Pack Cosmetics suggest that The Sideways and The Last Reality are the same Reality.
- Beta Rifts leading to Storm King's Realm and Sideways Anomalies are nearly identical, featuring the exact same corruption, the only difference being that Beta Rifts aren't completely corrupted. This suggest that The Sideways and Storm King Realm are the same Reality.
- This can also be evidenced because Storm Kings were revealed to be Corruption Cubes.
