Lore[]

Kendo styles himself as a warrior of old, but he's just restless and bored.
— Daigo

Kendo (健堂ケンドウ) is a street rōnin who was initially a masterless samurai seeking great purpose until he decided to forge his own destiny. He is also one of the Spirit Siblings.[1] He is the younger brother of Daigo, older brother of Jade, and a descendant of the family which served as the main cause of the Shattering War in Oninoshima.

He is one of the main protagonists of Chapter 6: Season 1, and a supporting character of Chapter 6: Season 2 and Chapter 6: Season 3.

Personality[]

Kendo starts off as an angsty introvert; a self-taught samurai with restless spirit and a pure heart. He became a warrior due to his love of old stories about the ancient magical samurai of Oninoshima. According his siblings, Kendo really loves his katana. At first, Kendo doesn't get along with his siblings very well as they each have their own conflicting beliefs, but he still loves them nonetheless.

At the start of Chapter 6: Season 3, Kendo enters a period of self-doubt, feeling overwhelmed lost after Daigo's corruption. Once Daigo is freed, Kendo decides to forge his own path, seeking an independent destiny rather than waiting for one to be given. By Chapter 6: Season 4, he describes himself as having let loose: more rough, wild, and free, loudly determined to defend Oninoshima and take control of his own fate. Over time, Kendo and his siblings also grow closer and reach a better understanding of each other.

History[]

Chapter 6: Season 1[]

Upon the re-emergence of magic phenomena, such as Demon Warriors and Sprites across Oninoshima following a fragment of The Zero Point crashing into the island, Kendo and his sister Jade settled in Nightshift Forest - nearby the crash site. There, they would meet Hope, allying with her due to their shared goals, and forming a group of Demon Hunters.

Kendo first enlists the help of The Looper following their inquiry on the demons invading the island, tasking them with investigating[2] - and subsequently hunting[3] - their presence.

Later on, Kendo calls upon The Looper to investigate Jade's sudden disappearance - leading them to his brother, Daigo, and his shop: The Thousand Faces. Kendo had immediately suspected his brother's involvement, as despite him and his siblings' contrasting beliefs, he finds Daigo and Jade to be particularly bad influences on each other due to their shared brilliance and reckless tendencies, alongside the fact that Daigo seems to be experimenting with dark magic to recreate the prohibited and dangerous Masks of Power their ancestors had, to Kendo's strong disliking.[4] Kendo's distrust of his brother is only enforced when The Looper comes across various Sprite experiments and an ancient, shattered Mask of Power within Daigo's workshop, which Kendo swiftly warns must never be repaired.[5]

Kendo had recalled seeing his sister in one of the portals to the Spirit Realm, though initally brushed it off as a hallucination. Following investigations done by The Looper and their own sighting of her, Daigo finally reveals that Jade had been cursed by the Demon Warriors, and the mask he then made to protect her had amplified her curse enough for her entrance into the realm, but evidently not for her exit - accidentally trapping her there. Daigo is left hoping the mask will still protect her, while Kendo wonders how, even with the mask, she was able to enter - as typically only demons are able to cross into the realm. He subsequently tasks himself with finding her, and bringing her home.[6]

Left with the same goal of saving Jade but different approaches on how to do so, Daigo and Kendo part ways. Kendo, frustrated at his brother only worsening their sister's situation,[7] continues to work alongside the Demon Hunters with the new goal of understanding the magic that left Jade stuck, while Daigo, feeling he failed her, goes off on his own.

Now aware that Jade is trapped within the Spirit Realm, Kendo tells The Looper he suspects the “comet” that crashed into the island - actually the Zero Point Shard - is tied to the magical resurgence across Oninoshima, specifically the return of demons. When visiting the crash site to investigate, they discover that the comet is gone and conclude it was taken to the Spirit Realm, but find a splinter left behind. Kendo senses immense power and potential in it and sends The Looper to Hope, believing she'll know what to do with their findings - leading to the discovery that the splinters may be the key to freeing Jade, after The Looper finds two more.

Kendo proposes The Looper uses the fragments to forge a weapon capable of cutting through the curse that binds Jade. However, uncertain of how to properly use them after The Looper creates the Splinter Blades, Kendo reluctantly tasks them with delivering the blades to The Night Rose: one of the Demon Warriors that had returned, though not evil by choice. The Night Rose realizes their power could free both herself and Jade, and after The Looper liberates her from The Puppeteer temporarily, she joins the Demon Hunters' cause - however, insisting that they must trust her, she gives the blades to Daigo, who then went off to begin his own plan.

When Kendo approaches Daigo during his ritual by a frozen Dragon Portal to pull Jade out from the other side, Daigo firmly tells him - and the rest of the Demon Hunters - not to interfere. Despite not understanding his plan, Kendo tries to trust him anyway.[8] As the ritual progresses, Daigo begins to open up to Kendo, sharing what he's learned about a "dark presence" within the realm that has been whispering to him, and his growing obligation to defeat it. Before the ritual ends, Daigo reassures Kendo that he has a plan and to remember that he knows who he is, even while things are at their darkest.

After witnessing Daigo fight to free Jade during The Confrontation Event, Kendo gains a newfound understanding of his brother, stating he now sees Daigo has always done what he's needed to in order to keep him and Jade safe.[9] However, having seen Daigo become increasingly fixated on defeating the darkness he'd learned of in his time by the portal, Kendo still tells Jade they need to keep an eye on their brother upon reuniting with her.[10]

Chapter 6: Season 2[]

In the time since The Confrontation Event, Kendo has once again grown frustrated with his brother, as Daigo is now fully convinced that he must face the Dark Presence to save the island, and that he is the only one capable of doing so - dismissing the concerns of both Kendo and Jade, and refusing to return home. Meanwhile, criminal activity surges throughout Oninoshima, fueled by the gold pouring from the portal Daigo used to free Jade as a side-effect of his Kintsugi magic. Kendo struggles to recognize the island he loves in its current state of greed and chaos[11] - though he still remains determined to protect it, now fully suited in his Demon Hunter gear.

With Jade exploring her destiny and connection to the Sprites, which Kendo proudly informs The Looper of,[12] and Daigo absent - Kendo grows much closer to Hope,[13] who reassures him that Daigo will turn up eventually.[14]

Still, Kendo tells The Looper that he has a bad feeling about Daigo's plans, and that whatever he's doing, they'll be the ones left to clean up the mess.[15]

Kendo first begins to uncover Daigo's deal with Fletcher Kane while fighting Alpha Guards, noticing their masks resemble Daigo's.[16] Later, Kendo encounters Daigo with Kane by his side during The Portal Phase of his plan, in the middle of another ritual at a Dragon Portal as he attempts to enter the Spirit Realm and confront the Dark Presence, wearing the freshly-repaired ancient, sinister Mask of Power from the lower floor of The Thousand Faces, to Kendo's shock.[17]

Galactic Battle[]

Kendo makes a small cameo next to Hope in the season's cinematic trailer, witnessing the Galactic Empire's arrival on Oninoshima.

Chapter 6: Season 3[]

Following each crisis throughout the seasons, Kendo begins to struggle with keeping up. Daigo's recent return from the Spirit Realm, now transformed into the Mask Maker under the Dark Presence, leaves Kendo feeling even more lost,[18] asking Hope whether she sees him as a hero, or a failure.[19]

With Daigo corrupted and hostile, Kendo starts to believe his brother is a traitor. Jade still holds out hope that Daigo is not himself, though Kendo claims to see that as clinging onto hope beyond reason,[20] even calling himself naive and a fool for previously never seeing Daigo as a villain despite his ruthless nature, now thinking he willingly turned his back on them for power and abandoned them.[21] Kendo tells his views to The Looper, including his uncertainty of what the future holds; the only thing he is sure of is that Hope, Jones, and their newly-formed academy of superheros, The Supernovas, will confront Daigo. Whether they win or lose, Kendo believes that either outcome will be unhappy.[22]

Still, Kendo once again begins working alongside Hope and later The Looper to investigate Daigo's activity. Meeting at Shogun's Solitude, Kendo admits to The Looper that while Daigo had always been dangerously overambitious, the version of him that emerged from the Spirit Realm is far too different. Kendo finally tells the Looper he needs their help to see if Daigo can possibly be saved. After the Looper faces the corrupted Mask Maker Daigo in battle and reports to Kendo, Kendo firmly concludes that while the Mask Maker may act like Daigo, a darkness has taken hold of his brother, meaning Daigo may still have a chance. The Looper then reports back to Hope.

After Daigo is freed following his confrontation with The Supernovas during Super Showdown, Kendo begins to reflect on himself. With Daigo home, and knowing he was never truly a villain, Kendo’s world feels set right again, giving him the clarity to question why he was so ready to fall apart in the first place. He tells The Looper that, at the core of things, Daigo has always tried to do what was best for their family alongside the island,[23] and that Jade was right about him.[24] Kendo decides he can no longer wait for destiny to come to him through a quest or a mentor; he must take control of his own fate and shape himself into the hero he wants to be.

Chapter 6: Season 4[]

As The Swarm invades Oninoshima, Kendo, now forging his own path apart from his siblings and the legends of old, remains determined to defend the island. Stationed at O.X.R. Base Theta, he tells The Looper that he is seizing his destiny: no longer waiting for fate, but acting decisively as Daigo and Jade did. Kendo also acknowledges that, while Daigo may think he still resents him for past actions, he has accepted his brother in all his flawed glory, recognizing the time has come to put the past aside and fight for the island like everyone else.[25] He shares his sentiments with Jade, telling her that even though he doesn't have magic like her and Daigo, he'll still stand up for what is right.[26] Kendo also reflects on his bond with Hope; recognizing that their time may have an expiration date, he tells her not to forget him.[27]

After a while spent fighting against The Swarm, Kendo begins to embrace his new identity. Now sporting his Street Rōnin gear, he tells The Looper that he has become wilder, freer, and let loose in deciding who he is.[28]
