Upgrade Benches are an object found within Fortnite: Battle Royale, which can be interacted with in order to upgrade or sidegrade weapons or equipment by using materials. They were first introduced in Chapter 2: Season 1 and are found all over the Apollo island.

In Chapter 2: Season 3, Upgrade Benches are able to be broken and can spawn in chests, and they take up 1 inventory slot per bench, although in Chapter 2: Season 4 this feature was removed.

As of Chapter 2: Season 5, Weapon Upgrade Benches have been Vaulted in favor of interacting with Characters for Bars.

Functionality

An Upgrade Bench can be found in key locations across the Island, primarily in named POIs, but still often found in other areas across the map. The benches have a white glow around the top of them, to highlight their existence and make it easier for players to locate them.

Going up to an upgrade bench allows a player to either upgrade, or sidegrade a weapon. Upgrading allows players to use increasing numbers of resources to increase the rarity, and therefore buff the statistics of held weaponry. Sidegrading allows a player to change a held weapon into another similar weapon. Not every weapon supports upgrading and not every weapon supports sidegrading.

In Chapter 2: Season 3, Upgrade Benches could be broken and spawn in chests as items. Throwing them would spawn an upgrade bench at the spot where they landed, and breaking them would give the item back. They could not deploy on water. They were Rare rarity and only stacked to one.
